Starting a calligraphy business isn’t just about writing pretty (though that’s a big part of it). It’s also about having a plan so you don’t feel lost or overwhelmed. A solid calligraphy business plan can help you stay organized, attract the right clients, and actually enjoy the journey!
Don’t worry—I’m not talking about some intimidating 50-page document (that you’ll spend hours on and never look at again). Instead, I’m talking about a simple plan that focuses on what really matters. Specifically, below are five things to include in your calligraphy business plan.
Before we dive in though, if you’re new here, welcome! I’m Alane, the wedding calligrapher and educator behind Write Pretty for Me. I love helping calligraphers like you grow businesses that feel fulfilling and manageable (without losing the joy that brought you here).
One of the best ways to start is with a strong marketing plan. Where do your dream clients hang out? Are they scrolling through Instagram, pinning wedding inspiration on Pinterest, or following calligraphy hashtags? That’s where you want to focus. Because without customers, you don’t really have a business!
My best piece of advice? Share your work consistently—whether it’s finished pieces or behind-the-scenes snaps. (People love seeing the process, even if you think it’s messy!)
You can also team up with wedding planners or photographers, create tutorials, or post time-lapse videos of your work. The goal? Help people connect who you are with what you can create.
Workflows might sound boring, but they’re lifesavers. Put simply, workflows are just step-by-step routines for how you handle different parts of your business.
For example, how do you handle new clients?
Here’s a simple one:
(Bonus: You’ll feel like you really have it together when you’re not scrambling to remember what comes next.)
Workflows aren’t just for clients with. You can create ones for social media, project delivery, or even keeping track of supplies. I use a mix of Honeybook and other tools to help me automate as much as possible, so that nothing is ever missed!
Running a business has hard moments, but it doesn’t mean you have to do everything the hard way. There are tools to help! And investing in tools, software, and even education should definitely be included in your calligraphy business plan.
A few of my favorites include:
These tools save so much time (and stress). Seriously, automating things like email replies or scheduling posts feels like having an extra set of hands.
If you try to please everyone, you’ll end up stressed and burnt out. Instead, focus on the people you love working with. This is one of the most important things to include in your calligraphy business plan.
Do you get excited about weddings? Branding projects? Maybe custom home decor? Pick your favorite type of project and tailor everything—your website, posts, and services—to attract those clients. I used to think I had to say yes to every opportunity, but saying no to the wrong ones made such a difference.
It also helps to think about what makes your style unique. Whether it’s modern, romantic, or bold, celebrate what makes your work stand out.
Last but not least, you need to solidify your messaging in your calligraphy business plan. Your website, emails, and social media should all tell the same story. What do you want people to know about you and your business?
Your website doesn’t need to be fancy. A simple one with examples of your work, an FAQ section, and a contact form is perfect. I have more advice on creating a website for your calligraphy business here.
On social media, share the real you. Post your work, sure, but also show behind-the-scenes moments, tips, and even a few “oops” moments. People connect with people, not just pretty pictures. Document this in your calligraphy business plan.
A calligraphy business plan isn’t about making things complicated—it’s about having solid foundations you can come back to. With a clear plan, you’ll feel less scattered and more confident.
Start with these five steps, and don’t stress about getting it perfect. It’s your business, and you can tweak things as you go.
