On one of their first dates at Battello in Jersey City, Tom turned to Meredith and said “Some day when we get married, it’ll be here”. Is that not the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard? Meredith and Tom met in college at Loyola University in Baltimore but ended up reconnecting and dating when they were both living in Hoboken. Tom’s originally from Long Island, but Meredith is a Jersey girl, at heart. Naturally, NYC sits at the center of their love story (and the view from the Battello felt like the perfect backdrop as they entered the next chapter of their love story).
I can’t even begin to describe how perfect Alane’s work is, let alone how lovely it is to work with her! From the start, she took a genuine interest in all of our signage ideas and took them to the next level. Everything came out beautiful and every single piece became a treasured part of our wedding. Alane is truly an artist, making it so much fun to brainstorm together how our signage needs would come to life. She’s responsive and incredibly flexible–she was patient enough to make a last minute correction to our seating chart just before the wedding too. Highly, highly recommend working with Alane at Write Pretty For Me!
Choosing the perfect wedding venue can be a daunting task, but Battello ticked all the boxes for these two. This contemporary yet timeless space boasts industrial and natural elements, which made it ideal for their wedding vision. I have to admit, it’s one of my favorite wedding venues in Jersey City too. Meredith and Tom wanted something with natural light, to create a cozy and romantic atmosphere.
For their ceremony wedding calligraphy details, we chose to reimagine the information that you would typically find on a ceremony program and add it to their welcome signage! This way, we could still honor and introduce their wedding party, without needing to create traditional ceremony programs.
For this wedding at Batello Jersey City, I got to play a part in a DIY project which was so fun! While most DIY projects you’ll find on Pinterest are more trouble than they are worth, I do love when couples choose to build something or repurpose something to make their wedding decor uniquely theirs. That was the case here! Meredith and Tom purchased two french doors to refinish (Meredith’s dad had experience refinishing wood), and then Tom and his friend (who happens to be a woodsmith) went in to give the doors a bit of an antique brassy/brown finish to fit in with the look at the Battello. They even replaced the antique glass doorknobs and brass plates (from 1899!) to make it feel more authentic and cool. It was a HUGE success.
Creating a cozy and romantic ambiance was important, but with them both coming from Italian paisano families, they also wanted it to feel like a big party as well. For their reception, we created a few elegant pieces that would make their design feel cohesive. I wrote signage for the table honoring their families (the love stories that came before them!), a signature cocktail sign featuring their favorite drinks, and a cards and gifts sign that told guests exactly what to do. That’s one of the reasons I love what I do so much – calligraphy has the power to enhance your guest’s experience (read why signage is so important here) but also to create one-of-kind personal details.
Battello in Jersey City as a wedding venue itself is breathtaking, but I absolutely adored the personal and custom touches Meredith and Tom added to their day. If you are looking for a wedding calligrapher to help you start designing your custom decor pieces, I would love to hear more about your vision. I have limited spots available for the remaining 2023 dates, so make sure to inquire soon to save your date!
