Winter might be quieter for some creative professionals, but in my experience it’s also full of unique opportunities—especially if you’re a calligrapher. From holiday products to spending some of the
“down time” connecting with local businesses, there are so many ways for calligraphers to make money during the winter season while also taking advantage of any downtime for business prep and rest. Today, I’m going to share a few ways I’ve made money as a calligrapher during the winter (and sharing a few things I’ve seen my colleagues do that have worked well for them too!)
Before we jump in though, are you new here? If so, WELCOME! I’m Alane, the one behind the (fountain) pen here at Write Pretty for Me. Not only am I a wedding calligrapher in New Jersey, but I’m also an online educator for calligraphers (with a heavy focus on systems and client experience, because those two things have made my business what it is today!). If you’re a calligrapher looking for support and mentorship, head here for all of the ways we can work together (and some free resources I think you’ll enjoy!).
Now, let’s get back to what you came for!
First, the most obvious (maybe). The holiday season is a prime time for custom calligraphy items! Consider creating:
As an added bonus? These products are easy to showcase both online and in-person to maximize sales. Whether through your website, Etsy, or social media, online sales can help you reach a lot of people without ever leaving home.
Bonus Tip: Plan promotions early to catch holiday shoppers on time (and figure out what your shipping cut off dates need to be!).
This one could be looped in with the above idea, but it’s definitely still worth mentioning. Winter markets are full of potential customers looking for unique, handmade gifts. Find local holiday fairs or craft markets to set up a booth and share your products in person. Markets offer a personal touch—people get to meet you and see the quality of your work up close, which can often drive higher sales and future referrals. Even if you don’t sell anything, you can offer live calligraphy for a card or present (that was purchased at the market!) for those shopping who wouldn’t mind splurging for an extra personal touch.

Next, consider live calligraphy events in local shops, cafes, or even holiday parties. Corporate events have a budget for you, they just need to know you exist! Plus, on-site calligraphy, where you create custom work on the spot, is engaging and can attract curious shoppers and become more memorable for those in attendance. Think personalized ornaments, custom gift tags, or even name cards for holiday gatherings. I’ve personally offered live calligraphy for years and have had the thrill of working for dreamy clients like Jimmy Choo and even Coca-Cola!
If you want to hear more about adding a LIVE element to your calligraphy service menu, make sure to tune into this episode where we interview Cat and Alex (hosts of Keeping Up with the Calligraphers) about how to market and price your services for live events!
Lastly, when it comes to ways to make money as a calligrapher during the winter, many local businesses are looking to add seasonal flair to their storefronts, especially during the holidays. Reach out to restaurants, boutiques, or cafes about designing window displays or menu boards. For storefronts, consider festive quotes or seasonal designs to grab attention. You can also offer gift certificates to local shops to sell to their customers as a unique holiday gift.
If winter is slower for you, I also want to encourage you to use it to recharge and prepare your business for busier seasons ahead.
Here are some things I do every year to make money as a calligrapher during the winter (or at the very least, to set me up to make more money next year):
