If you’ve ever found yourself drooling over pretty penmanship, you’re in the right place. Learning calligraphy on your own can be an enjoyable and rewarding process, especially with the right tools and resources at your fingertips. Trust me, I’ve made this my full-time career for the last six years (and picked up my first calligraphy nib over a decade ago). And today? I’m walking you through how to teach yourself calligraphy (and don’t worry, this is a complete beginner’s guide!).
Let’s get started!
Before you jump into tutorials and practice sheets, it’s important to have the right tools. A beginner calligraphy kit typically includes a brush pen, paper, and basic guides. You can find these kits in craft stores or online. Don’t feel like you need the “best of the best” tools to get started. If you’re like me, you will definitely add to your calligraphy toolkit as you go!

Another thing I wish more people talked about is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get started—there are plenty of free resources available online that can help you master the basics.
YouTube is a fantastic resource for learning calligraphy at your own pace. Many talented calligraphers share detailed tutorials that walk you through everything from basic strokes to creating entire phrases. Search for videos on “brush calligraphy for beginners” to get started.
Here are some things I look for in a good tutorial:
Try to follow along with the video, pausing as needed. The visual aspect of YouTube makes it easier to understand how to form each stroke, making it a valuable learning tool.
Instagram is a hub for calligraphy inspiration and tips. Many artists share short videos, tips, and practice sheets that you can try out on your own. Following experienced calligraphers allows you to see different styles and techniques, which can help you develop your own unique flair. A few hashtags to get you started: #moderncalligraphy, #brushcalligraphy, and #letteringpractice.
You might even find some calligraphers who offer free live sessions or mini-tutorials through Instagram stories and reels.
And while you’re there, be sure to follow me for regular tips, tutorials, and a peek into my calligraphy journey. I often share behind-the-scenes videos and helpful tips to keep you inspired!
While there are plenty of free resources available, investing in paid classes can be a great way to accelerate your progress, especially if you’re serious about calligraphy.
Skillshare offers a range of calligraphy classes, from beginner to advanced levels. These classes provide structured lessons, so you’ll be guided through each step of the process. Many Skillshare teachers also offer downloadable worksheets and exercises that can help you master the techniques faster. Some advantages of skillshare classes is access to a variety of courses, ability to learn at your own pace, and guidance from experienced instructors.
If you prefer hands-on guidance, look for in-person calligraphy workshops in your area. These classes offer immediate feedback and personalized instruction, which can be incredibly valuable as you’re learning. Check local art stores, craft centers, or community colleges for workshops or short courses.
